Slowly Alternatives in 2026: Penpal Apps With a Different Pace
By Liebeastra
Disclaimer: I build penfolk, one of the options below. Facts about the other apps come from their own websites or US App Store listings, checked in October 2026.
I really like Slowly. Letters take a few hours to a few days to arrive depending on how far away your penpal lives, there are no photos and no real names, and you collect stamps from all over the world. It's free to send and receive letters, with an optional Slowly Plus subscription. For a lot of people it's the nicest corner of the internet.
But the things that make Slowly special are also why some people end up looking elsewhere.
Why people look for a Slowly alternative
The wait. The delay is the whole idea, and Slowly is upfront about it. But if you're learning a language and want feedback today, or you've just clicked with someone and want to keep going, waiting two days for a reply can feel long.
No photos, no real names. Again, that's the point, and it's why Slowly feels safe and calm. But some people want to see who they're talking to, or add someone on another app once they've become friends.
It's writing only. That's great for writing practice. If you also want to practice speaking, you'll need another app next to it.
Meeting up is hard. Slowly is built for penpals far away. If you're about to travel and want to meet people in the city you're going to, that's not really what it's for.
The alternatives
| App | What's different from Slowly | Price |
|---|---|---|
| HelloTalk | Instant chat, voice and video, a public feed | Free, VIP from $12.99/month or $79.99/year |
| Tandem | Instant chat and calls, members are screened first | Free, Tandem Pro (12 months listed at $69.99) |
| Speaky | Instant text and voice chat, no subscription | Free |
| Conversation Exchange | Find penpals or people to meet locally | Free |
| penfolk | Slow DMs with real profiles, music taste and travel plans | Free, optional $2.99/month supporter tier |
HelloTalk
The fast option. You chat in real time by text, voice or video, with translation and corrections in the chat. There's also a Moments feed where native speakers correct your posts. It's very different from Slowly. Busier, and closer to social media.
Tandem
Also real-time, but more focused on 1-to-1 conversations, with voice notes plus audio and video calls. Tandem reviews new members before letting them in, which helps if you liked how safe Slowly felt.
Speaky
Free and simple. Text or voice chat with native speakers, on the web or your phone.
Conversation Exchange
An old website. I don't mean that as an insult. It has a penpal search for people who want to write to each other, and a search for people near you to meet for a face-to-face exchange.
penfolk
Mine, so I'm biased. If what you like about Slowly is the pace, penfolk keeps some of that. There's no pressure to reply right away, and there's no algorithm deciding what you see. Messages arrive instantly, though, so you can go as slow or as fast as you both want.
The main difference is the profiles. On penfolk you can see who someone is before you write: the languages they speak and learn, their music from Spotify or Last.fm, their Top 3 albums or books, and where they're travelling next. The Partners view ranks people on matching languages and shared interests. If you add an upcoming trip, penfolk shows you members going to the same place at the same time, so a penpal can turn into someone you actually meet.
Messages also support voice notes, so you can practice speaking without jumping straight into a call.
What you lose compared to Slowly: no stamps, no letter delivery ritual, and penfolk is a lot smaller. Free accounts can start 10 new conversations a day, with an optional $2.99/month supporter tier.
Which one should you pick?
- You want instant feedback on your language: HelloTalk.
- You want to start speaking with calls: Tandem.
- You want something free and quick: Speaky.
- You still want old-fashioned penpals, or people to meet locally: Conversation Exchange.
- You like the slow pace but want real profiles and shared interests: try penfolk.
Lots of people keep Slowly for their letters and use another app for practice. Nothing wrong with that.

Yes. HelloTalk, Tandem and penfolk all have profile photos. penfolk also shows interests, music taste and travel plans on profiles.
Can I use Slowly for language exchange?
Yes. Slowly is built for writing letters, and a lot of people use it to practice a language with a penpal. It just won't help much with speaking.

For the classic letter experience, Slowly. For penpals you might actually meet when you travel, penfolk. For a big pool of people learning languages, HelloTalk or Tandem.
