Tandem Alternatives in 2026: Language Exchange Without the Wait

I build penfolk, which is one of the options in this post, so keep that in mind. Everything I say about the other apps comes from their own websites or US App Store listings, checked in October 2026.

Tandem is one of the best language exchange apps around. It's built around 1-to-1 conversation: text, voice notes or calls. It covers more than 300 languages, including 12 sign languages. If it works for you, keep using it.

Still, there are a few reasons people look elsewhere.

Why people look for a Tandem alternative

Waiting to get in. Tandem reviews every application to keep the community safe. That's a good thing. It also means you can't always start straight away. On complaint sites you'll find people saying they were stuck on a "wait 7 days" screen for months while a friend got approved within a day. That's one person's experience, not the norm, but if you're stuck in the queue it's maddening.

Paying for Pro. The core app is free. Tandem Pro gives you access to the rest, and the US App Store lists a 12-month plan at $69.99. If you only want a casual chat partner, that may be more than you want to spend.

Calls aren't for everyone. Tandem is strong if you want to speak. If talking on video with a stranger makes you nervous, or you'd rather practice writing first, you may want something slower.

Nothing in common but the language. This isn't specific to Tandem. It's the language exchange problem in general. You match because she speaks Portuguese and you speak English. After a week, you've run out of things to say.

The alternatives

SlowlyLetters that take hours to days to arrive, no photosFree letters, optional Slowly Plus
SpeakyA simpler app with no subscriptionFree
Conversation ExchangeWebsite for penpals and meeting people in your cityFree
penfolkMatches on shared interests as well as languages, slower paceFree, optional $2.99/month supporter tier

HelloTalk

The obvious one. HelloTalk lets you chat by text or call by voice or video, with translation and corrections inside the chat. It also has a social feed called Moments and group Voicerooms. It's big, so finding a partner is quick. Free users have some daily limits, and features like searching by gender or by city are VIP only, according to FluentU's review.

Slowly

If calls are what put you off, Slowly goes in the other direction. You write letters, and they arrive a few hours or a few days later depending on how far away your penpal is. No photos. No real names. It's the best option here for writing practice and for people who don't like pressure.

Speaky

Speaky is free with no subscription. You chat by text or voice, on the web or on your phone. If Tandem felt like too much setup, Speaky is quick to start with.

Conversation Exchange

An older website, but useful in a way many apps aren't. It lets you search for people nearby to meet for a face-to-face exchange. You can also look for penpals or chat partners there.

penfolk

Mine, so I'm biased. penfolk tries to fix the "nothing in common" part. Your profile has your languages, plus your music if you connect Spotify or Last.fm, Top 3 lists and travel plans. The Partners view ranks people on whether your languages fit both ways, then on how many interests you share. If you add a trip, it shows you members heading to the same place at the same time.

There's no application to wait on. You sign up and start browsing. Messages are DMs with voice notes and inline corrections, and nobody expects an instant reply. The feed is chronological. There's no algorithm shoving posts at you.

The honest downsides compared to Tandem: penfolk is much smaller, so rarer languages have fewer people, and there are no audio or video calls in the app. Free accounts can start 10 new conversations a day. There's an optional $2.99/month supporter tier, but matching and messaging are free.

Which one should you pick?

  • You want to start right now and like social features: HelloTalk.
  • Calls make you nervous and you'd rather write: Slowly.
  • You just want free and simple: Speaky.
  • You want to meet someone in your own city: Conversation Exchange.
  • You want a partner you'd actually be friends with: try penfolk.

FAQ

Why is my Tandem account still waiting for approval?

Tandem reviews applications before you can use the app. Most go through, but some take longer. Check your email in case they asked for more information, and contact Tandem support if it's been a long time.

Is there a language exchange app like Tandem without an application?

HelloTalk, Speaky and penfolk all let you start right after signing up.

Is there a free alternative to Tandem Pro?

The free version of Tandem itself works fine for most people. If you want a fully free app, Speaky and Conversation Exchange have no paid tier. penfolk is free with an optional supporter tier.

Which Tandem alternative is best for writing practice?

Slowly, because the whole app is long letters. penfolk works too if you prefer slower DMs over calls.
